about

In early 2023, MBR alum Abby Gregg (Duck Turnstone, Uma's Thermos) was invited by Meow Wolf to display her work & singular painting style in a long-running interactive display at their Denver location. This EP was created as a site-specific soundscape for an exhibition of paintings and sculptures titled "Beneath the Biophony", on view at Meow Wolf Denver through June 29th 2023.
The title refers to the acoustic ecology, or "Biophony" of the imagined ecosystems of Gregg's work. In a given biome, beings adjust the timbre of their communication to fit within the elaborate symphony of other creatures in their ecosystem. In these speculative ecosystems, beings live in symbiosis within living architecture. Drawing a parallel between human capacity and that of coral reefs; these narrative landscapes shelter, tend, and interact with reciprocity.
"Fossil Sounds" functions as an emotional landscape; a sonic ecosystem that oscillates between grief and wonder while grounding the listener into their environment.
"Beneath the Biophony", includes paintings, sculptures, and sound that are imaginings of microscopic, amphibious, and submerged unseen realms, calling out with sparkling uncertainty and a vulnerable urgency. Imagery conjures narratives of treacherous, plastic landscapes reshaped by time and vivid decoration.
Abby Gregg's work has dotted the trajectory of MBR for the last decade; not only illustrating a number of our album covers but lending her voice, abilities and sensibilities to countless offshoot projects. We are really proud that her work is being recognized on such a scale! Listen to the impressionistic soundtrack here and be instantly TRANSPORTED to "Beneath the Biophony" . . . . .
