Sunset Honor Unit is Atlanta's premiere underground pop supergroup! Fronted by primary songwriters Drew Kirby (Mothers, Twen, New Wives) and Jake Chisenhall (Delorean Gray, Fake Flowers), Sunset Honor Unit is an upstart recording co-operative backed by Noah Estrella (Floral Print), Dariush Mirsajedin (Delphinium) and Jason Bronson, focused on classic forms of pop escapism filtered through a modernized, hyper-saturated DIY home-recording ethic.
Conceived as a "singles" band & drawing as far back as 2014 for material, lead single "Drift" was called "deliriously catchy" by Immersive Atlanta, featuring Byrds-ian harmonies over white-hot Thin Lizzy riffs in “an almost prog-like affinity for dextrous runs.”
The whole project was tracked by the band themselves, with Kirby at the helm, to 1/4” tape via Tascam 388 -- a vintage 70’s-era tape machine that's becoming increasingly popular for having a 1/4" reel-to-reel and an 8-channel mixer built into the same table-sized unit. Initial sessions happened to fall on Election Day 2020, as the early-voting band spent the day in solitude in Kowaliga, AL getting initial tracking for all 5 songs completed. On the back end, overdubs were completed in Estrella’s East Atlanta home before handing the project over to Andy Lemaster (Bright Eyes) to mix and carry over the finish line.
Says Kirby of Sunset Honor Unit: “Honestly, we've all played music in Georgia for a collective half century at least - this is kind of a consolidation of that effort into a sort of supercharged modular recording collective. Hopefully we can adapt that idea to a wide variety of popular forms of music - rock, r&b, even country, surf music.”
With an omnivorous palette and enormous appetite for good hooks across a litany of genres, Sunset Honor Unit aims to musically embody the optimism implied in their name and all the space-age nautical aesthetics.
“The turbopop bop operatives have arrived! S.H.U. in your stereo! S.H.U. in your system!”
