Pop music evolves, and no one knows that better than Sebastian Marquez (he/him). As the lead singer, songwriter and producer of Slime Ring, Marquez is no stranger to innovation, especially in music.

Started as the solo project of Marquez, Slime Ring is a queer, Latinx experimental pop project that has grown into something entirely its own. With a rich variety of influences spanning from Yasunori Mitsuda and Steve Reich, to Radiohead and SZA, Slime Ring taps into creative minimalism, exploring the ways that sound can manifest beyond instrumentation. Although Marquez was previously the singer/songwriter for Athens punk group Dead Neighbors, Slime Ring shows a different side of Marquez––wistful, dreamy and entirely introspective.

In the debut solo release SLM_RNG_EP, Marquez introduces experimental pop through layering, synthesized echos and audio manipulation. The SLM_RNG_EP mirrors the ethos of punk music while diving into the composition of low-fi beats––by gathering inspiration from JRPGs, anime, hip-hop and modern classical to inform a new generation of pop. Partner that with diary-style confessional lyrics, and the SLM_RNG_EP turns into a body of water swimming with emotive expression.

Overall, Slime Ring is a force of motion. Each track on the SLM_RNG_EP introduces a new set of emotions, and translates them into unexpected synchronicity––leading you on a journey through the creative process of Marquez himself.

Pop music is changing, and instead of demanding that change, Slime Ring is leading by example.
