about

"In the dugout someone tells a joke/I don't get it but I laugh along..."

On his most dub inflected batch of bops yet, Patrick Brick a.k.a. FUTO displays a knack for refracting emotional hangups about our modern condition back thru personal memories in a way that feels entirely specific, without delving into confession or oversharing. It's this with-holding, writerly hand that elevates his songs into something genuinely sort of sacred & thought-provoking (without being overly self-serious) like mini-koans to histories shared but also intensely personal.

It's what turns something like the simple theme and baseball pun of the title into something that smacks with the pang of early loss and isolation: the feeling of being alone in a field or a crowd, lacking any sort of belonging or confidence, riddled with worry & worldly expectation. These composite memory sketches take the form of different signifiers and specific locations throughout the record - the coach, the dugout, the moon - as Brick walks back through different moments + modes of being. These kids out standing in the field grow up to be the adults that make art during generational pandemics. In the artist's words, "it's an album about baseball." The world continues to turn.

The collection ends with 2 songs deeply in the traditional Futo wheelhouse, which is to say they're heartwrenching and sweet and are liable to make you call someone you care about. I'm typing this as a biased friend but also a fan - I think these are all things that make Brick's work standout amongst a sea of tryhards and wannabes! The more things change the more they stay the same! Patty reigns as the premiere sadbop bedroom acoustotronic pop prince, straight outta snellville and real as he ever was!!!
