Ingwit It's such a shame I only discovered the full scope and accessibility of the Athens music scene after I left Athens. Picked this album on a whim and it's a lot of loose echoey fun that somehow evokes an Athens summer when the students have left and whoever's still around is there because they want to be and chilling. And it wasn't even recorded there. Favorite track: Goldfish.

about

"SG" is the debut album by Sea Ghost, an Atlanta-based ghostwave power poppin' quartet comprised of Carter Sutherland (vocals, synths, guitar), Brandon Chester (guitar), Jay Harris (bass) & Jonathon Morningstar (drums).

Conceived and begun while the band was still in high school, "SG" is the culmination of a year of careful, nurtured growth after near-immediate attention following the nascent band's "Running Away" collab with ILoveMakonnen (of "Club Goin Up On A Tuesday" fame). Says Sutherland of the collab, in a recent interview for Creative Loafing: "I emailed him almost as a joke, and then he came over with all of these guys from FADER, and they put it in print. It was weird. We hadn't played any shows yet, and all of these people started talking to me about working with our band."

"But we hadn't figured anything out. We didn't even know what we wanted to do," he adds. "So we didn't put anything out for a while."

So the band holed up in the same basement where they tracked "Running Away" to develop the 9 tracks that compose "SG". Over the course of the past year, Sea Ghost has developed a small but cultishly devoted following through a smattering impromptu DIY fests & house shows, ensuring to this day that any Sea Ghost show turns into at least somewhat of a dance party.

The album retains that energy in all of its youthful exuberance, but where the band truly succeeds is centered in the emotional core of Sutherland's writing. Themes of escape, release and loyalty ensure that "SG" sounds like how you felt when you were 18 and standing on the precipice of adulthood. It sounds frightened but also resolutely brave. It's melancholy but ultimately hopeful.

"I want to be in rougher plains.
I've wanted this since we were kids.
When we get out and decompose,
god only knows where we could go.
If we keep up and count our age,
we won't do much but yearn for the past."

"SG" is out now on CD + Cassette + Digital via Marching Banana Records. Order here or at seaghostband.bandcamp.com
